There are concerns of a series of reports showing a rare type of leg fracture that shears straight across the upper thighbone after little or no trauma. The case report shows the unusual fracture pattern in people who have used bone building drugs (Fosomax, Boniva, etc) for five years or more.

They say most patients recieved the iv form of the drug but we have talked to many doctors in our area that have seen many more cases where it is the oral form and they are not cancer patients.

I'd definately recommend calcium supplements before any stronger drugs. I think many people aren't taking appropriate calcium supplements with these bone building drugs. It's easier to take Fosamax once a week than calcium 3-4 times a day. You can't make bones without the building blocks!
Also, don't forget Vitamin D, which will help with calcium absorption. Vitamin D supplementation of 400-1,000 IU per day works with calcium to build strong bones.
